General Background Information

Implemented on behalf of the German Federal Ministry for Economic Cooperation and Development (BMZ), the Special Initiative Jobs  on Training and Job Creation under the invest for Job brand(SI Jobs) program of Deutsche Gesellschaft für Internationale Zusam- menarbeit GmbH (GIZ) is promoting job-creating growth in selected sectors in Ethiopia. The SI-Jobs targets private sector development for economic clusters in selected geographical areas and promotes sustain- able investments that leads to more employment.

The sequa gGmbH implements the SME Grant Scheme in Ethiopia on behalf of the GIZ Invest for Jobs Scheme. The SME Grants Scheme targets SMEs, mainly in the Agroprocessing and textile/ garment sector. The overall objective of the SI-Job is to increase innovation and productivity in selected SMEs in both sectrs in Ethiopia in a way that creates jobs. The growth of the private sector plays a crucial role in the overall growth of a nation.

Sequa gGmbh has been providing various support to selected SMEs found in Addis Ababa, Oromia, Amhara and South Nations and Nationalities Peoples Regional States. The support aimed at improving quality of products, increasing product diversity, production capacity, access to market and financial sustainability. The program has been running for more than a year. During the implementation period, various interventions were rolled out and the SMEs managed to improve productivity and increase sales and ultimately generate employment opportunities.

  1. Management Consultant

GIZ sequa is working with 19 SMEs and 5 start-ups for the SME Grant scheme of which two companies have requested technical assistance for a management consultant. The consultant is expected to technically support those enterprises in for a short period. He/she will be responsible to deliver various tasks and deliverables as specified in the below sections. The target companies are engaged in the production of skin and hair oil processing and traditional/local beverage (Tella). Both companies are located in Addis Ababa.

Objectives of the Assignment

The main objective of the assignment will be to enable the SMEs to improve business performance/efficiency, create value and maximize growth.

Description of specific activities:

  • Conduct management gap assessment
  • Interview and observe employees within a company to locate problem areas and find ways to improve staff functions.
  • Analyse company financial data to find excess spending and locate budget improvements that can increase company revenue.
  • Identify issues and form hypothesis and solutions
  • Assist the companies in implementing recommendations or solutions.
  • Prepare business operations’ manuals and train team leaders on how to apply them
  • Organize employee and management workshops to increase staff productivity.
  • Support company management to oversee staff motivation through HR restructuring and welfare improvement

Deliverables

In order to proof the accomplishment of the detailed tasks, the management consultant shall deliver the following

  • Management gap assessment report or business x-ray report
  • Action plan based on the gap assessment
  • Operational manuals including HR, procurement, materials management and procedure manual etc based on the gap assessment or business x-ray report
  • Strategic plan: 3 years strategy; first year operational plan
  • Financial management policy and procedure manual
  • Monthly report to sequa

Job Title of the Consultant: Management consultant 

We are looking for an outstanding motivated senior marketing consultant with technical experience in marketing of private local manufacturing companies preferably in the agribusiness sector including honey, poultry, tea processing, bakery, and oats processing; and also interested to work with SMEs in the sector. The expert should have the following profile:

  • Bachelor’s degree in management or related field of study from a recognized institution.
  • A minimum of 10 years’ practical experience in the field of company or SMEs management consulting.
  • Proven technical experience and experience related in management consultancy.
  • Experience in SME management support services
  • Interpersonal and communication skills
  • Written and oral skill (local language and English)
  • Ability to work in a team

Working Condition

The consultant must work closely with the companies and the companies will provide all available data for the expert. In case of data gaps, the expert is expected to fill such gaps in close collaboration with the companies.

The consultancy is to be conducted in Addis Ababa in the premises of the enterprises in close collaboration with sequa office. sequa covers transport cost.

Duration of Work

The activities are foreseen to be conducted from March 20, 2022 to May 31, 2022. The total duration of the consultancy is up to 50 days, up to 25 days for each of the two companies.

  1. Marketing and Sales Strategy Expert

The consultant is expected to technically support two enterprises for a short period. He/she will be responsible to deliver various tasks and deliverables as specified in the below sections. The target companies are engaged in the production of skin and hair oil processing and coffee roasting and grinding. Both companies are located in Addis Ababa.                          Objectives of the Assignment

The major objective of the assignment is to develop sales penetration tactics and generic marketing strategy.

Description of specific tasks:

Major assignments include:

  • Facilitate brand audit and inception report
  • prepare a competitor Intelligence gathering format for the Company including usage training
  • Prepare and brand building creatives concepts document for Selam Coffee
  • Develop marketing plan
  • Conduct SWOT analysis with regards to marketing and sales
  • Liaise with external vendors to execute promotional events and campaigns
  • Support in the expansion of distribution channels
  • Facilitate trainings based on the developed documents
  • Assist in the recruitment and selection of sales and marketing experts
  • Advice on unique selling point definition and subsequent product differentiation
  • Brainstorm and develop ideas for creative marketing campaign
  • Prepare an executive calendar for all activates
  • Assist in development of company sales structure
  • Define target customers and consumer touch points
  • Support in preparing of a Job description for the sales and marketing supervisor role and also assist in the recruitment and onboarding
  • Assist in TV commercial production process
  • Advice on product branding and packaging
  • Preparation of executive calendar for all activities including half day training and how to use the document

Deliverables

In order to proof the accomplishment of the detailed tasks, the marketing consultant shall deliver the following

  • Inception report for both SMEs
  • Develop tailor made marketing tactics for both SMEs
  • Sales penetration scheme’s or tactics document for both companies
  • Competitor intelligence gathering format for start-up Jeroccia
  • Develop executive calendar and provide training on it for Jeroccia
  • Develop customer service manual and training for Paradise oil
  • Provide a regular report to sequa

  1. Marketing, Branding and Sales Expert

Objectives of the Assignment

The major objective of the assignment is to enable the SME Anjonus Fruit and vegetable Processing enterprise located in Arbaminch improve its competitiveness through designing standard marketing systems.

Description of specific tasks:

Major Assignments Include supporting the Company in:

  • Local market study for the formation of marketing strategy in a business context, target market and competitors.
  • Developing marketing plan and tactics for its implementation
  • Develop detailed marketing plan
  • Conduct SWOT analysis for the enterprise
  • Advice on how to communicate the value of the product to customers using different means
  • Support in the expansion of distribution channels
  • Determine a business’s marketing message and identify the appropriate marketing mix to send the message to the target market.
  • Advice on unique selling point definition and subsequent product differentiation
  • Brainstorm and develop ideas for creative marketing campaign
  • Design a market communication concept
  • Define target customers and consumer touch points
  • Advice on product branding and packaging
  • Support companies in increasing their sales
  • Conduct trainings on market strategy, brand awareness and customer service

Required experience and staff

  1. Strategic Planning Development

Objectives of the Assignment

The major objective of the assignment is to enhance the SME SME Anjonus Fruit and vegetable Processing enterprise located in Arbaminch to develop a five-year strategic plan that leads to a clear growth direction.

Description of specific tasks:

Major assignments include:

  • Carry out a desk review of documents relevant to the development of the strategic plan
  • Review the organizational capacity, organizational set-up, financial and administrative systems and make recommendations.
  • Share a program of work; prepare a list of stakeholders to interview.
  • Conduct interviews with key actors and informants: In addition to direct face-to-face interviews with staff of the enterprise, the consultant will also use online survey method to reach key customer for information and opinions that will guide the elaboration of the strategic plan.
  • Propose a clear strategy for achieving the strategic objectives and key results
  • Develop a results and resources framework for the plan period.
  • Develop an operational plan on costs, timeline, priority order, and accountability for each strategy and tactic.
  • Finalize the Strategic Plan and submit to the enterprise for adoption.

Deliverables

In order to proof the accomplishment of the detailed tasks, the marketing consultant /firm shall deliver the following

  • Inception Report of not more than 15 pages. This may include elaboration of a methodology/action plan, work plan, list and contacts of key stakeholders
  • Five-year strategic plan: Initially first draft should be presented and discussed with management team of Anjonus. The final draft after incorporating inputs from management team. The plan may not exceed 50 pages and should be in English language only. The five year strategic plan should include executive summary, vision and mission statement, key strategic priorities, logical framework for the implementation of the strategic plan, SWOT analysis, etc.
  • Detailed implementation plan, which will include all implementable strategic priority activities that balance the short-term quick results and long-term work that delivers the most results with in the capacities, resources and time frames.

Qualification and experience

The following qualification and experience is required:

  • At least graduate degree in a technical field relevant to economics, business or related fields of study.
  • At least 10 years’ experience in the areas of private sector development.
  • Experience working with SMEs preferably in Ethiopia
  • Strong professional knowledge in business issue with particular reference to agro-processing companies or SMEs
  • Experience in leading strategic planning process and group facilitation skills
  • Good understanding of the Ethiopian agro-processing sector
  • Excellent communication and writing skills in English
  • Good written and oral skill (English and Amharic)
  • Ability to work in a team
  • Excellent ability in client communication and orientation
