ORGANIZATION FOR WELFARE AND DEVELOPMENT IN ACTION
INVITATION TO BID
Organization for Welfare and Development in Action (OWDA) is a non-governmental humanitarian organization, established in 1999 in Jigjiga, Ethiopia, with objective of serving pastorals and agro-pastoral communities in Somali Regional State. The ORGANIZATION FOR WELFARE AND DEVELOPMENT IN ACTION (OWDA) has received funds from The Somali Region is one of the most underserved regions regarding health services in Ethiopia. It is a region that has been left behind. All the health indicators in the Region are significantly lower compared to the rest of the country. Particularly the maternal and neonatal mortality rates are deplorable. The Doolo Zone is an extremely challenging place with great barriers for women to access maternal and newborn health services. Some of the reasons are a vast and wide landscape with a sparsely, scattered and mobile population, people who are suffering under periodic natural disasters due to climate change as well as a dysfunctional health system with just a few health providers. These challenges and needs make an intervention imperative.
This is why Women’s Hope International (WHI) will start its project intervention there.
Women’s Hope International (WHI) has been active in reproductive and maternal health for 14 years in Afghanistan, Bangladesh, Chad and Ethiopia. Since 2004, WHI has been working in Ethiopia in close partnership with five prominent institutions, all having a high expertise in maternal health. WHI was involved in setting up the Hamlin Midwifery College. For many years, WHI has partnered with Attat Hospital based in Ethiopian Gurage Regional State, a prominent teaching hospital for Medical Officers which pioneered the first Maternal Waiting Home in the country. With CUAMM Doctors with Africa and in collaboration with the Zonal and District health offices, WHI is involved in a health system-strengthening project with focus on maternal and newborn health in the three Districts of Wolisso, Goro and Wonchi in Ethiopian Oromo Regional State.
